Doswell Lad Wins Virginia DMV Mascot Contest

14-year-old Tim Schnickel, of Telegraph Road in Doswell has won the 2009 Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles mascot contest.

Tim’s drawing of “Lightnin’ the Slug” won out over 3 other entries from middle-schoolers all across the commonwealth, according to DMV deputy office of information dispersal Janice Krenig.

“It is the commonwealth’s honor to present this certificate and lapel pin of achievement to young Tim, who exemplifies the spirit of camaraderie, workmanship and state-sponsored initiative.” stated Krenig in a rather stiff presentation at the downtown DMV facility on West Broad Street in Richmond as a hovercraft idled overhead. “We should all look up to young Tim as a shining example of the value of hard work, dedication and stick-to-itiveness in this time of fear and trepidation.”

Krenig, dwarfed by a huge photo of Governor Tim Kaine and surrounded by several elderly generals decorated in dozens of medals, then pinned a copper lapel pin of state achievement on Tim’s collar before smartly saluting him. There was a smattering of polite applause before a brief presentation by Curtis Blow, Deputy Prime Minister of information Retrieval.

“Master Schnickel’s mascot appears in the DMV Fun time Activity Book, which is being made available to you all at this moment,” he announced. “Carry this fun time book home and complete all of the activities therein. That is all.”

Following the presentation Mr. Blow, Mrs. Krenig and their staffs applauded lightly then exited the stage in parade formation. A man inside the overhead hovercraft then announced over a loudspeaker that the presentation was over, and all should return to their places of employment, in an orderly fashion. Which they all did.

Such blantant misuse of the word "fun".

I have to renew my license at the end of the month. This is so handy. Instead of a wood-carving set and a six-pack of Dew, I'm taking this book with me!!
