Driver Madge Watkins’ husband Larry to drain out gas and oil, remove tags, push bus down in woods
A disappointed Madge Watkins received word Tuesday night that after the last emergency funding grant from the Doswell Arts & Cultural Funding Consortium runs out, the Glass Bottom Bus Tour will become a forgotten part of Doswell lore.
“We were truly hoping the stimulus package passed last weekend by congress would include funding for the GB tour.” Says Watkins. “Good grief, they funded everything else. They couldn’t scrape up a few thousand to help us continue to provide such a valuable and necessary service to the residents and visitors of Doswell?”
In light of the funding predicament, Watkins says she will officially retire the glass bottom bus this coming Saturday. “My husband Larry plans to drain all the fluids and pull off the tags,” she says, “Then after a short ceremony, he and our neighbor Wallace will push it down in the woods.”
The Doswell glass bottom bus will then hopefully become a habitat for local small woodland creatures, or a temporary shelter for a homeless person.
