Doswell Arts & Culture Funding Consortium to Hold Annual Bake Sale

Motto is now “What’s good enough for Ashland is even better for Doswell®”

After exhausting their coffers of the final $32 to gas up the Doswell Glass Bottom Bus Tour one last time (and thus avoiding a repeat of last summer’s incident when riders – including guest rider novelist Patricia Cornwell – had to push the bus uphill on Route 1 from the Stop n’ Go Mart to #1 Towing), the Doswell Arts & Culture Funding Consortium will be holding a bake sale March 9, 2009 at the Ruritan building to raise money for Doswell Arts and specifically, one lucky Doswell artist.

“Our annual bake sale is our top money-maker,” says Maude Ridgeway, DACFC chairwoman. “We again look forward to advancing the arts here in Doswell, except of course for Peggy’s son.” Peggy’s son is the local “conceptual artist”, whose art is not considered art, or even likeable by most residents.

The consortium also will not fund the full size costume for “Humdinger”, the Doswell mascot. “Peggy’s son is behind that request as well,” reports a skeptical Ridgeway, “Besides that ridiculous mascot has not been used since the 1950’s, and I think he wants the money to buy a van he saw in the Trading Post for $400.”

On a positive note, Ridgeway says that for the 16th consecutive year, money raised by the bake sale will be granted to Lila Macadams, whose name again was uncannily drawn in the “Pottery Lottery” held by the consortium. “This year we had almost 5 potters enter our lottery for the grant money, up from 4 last year. Soon Doswell be known as the Pottery Capital of central Virginia, especially if Williamsburg Pottery goes bankrupt like Madge Watkins is hoping it will.”

Macadams is grateful for the money, and will once again be exhibiting her pottery at the Ladysmith Flea Market on Sundays between Memorial Day and Labor Day. “My pottery is timeless,” she claims, “and not intended for household use.”
